Position Summary
This position is responsible for directing the department’s Uniform Patrol/CID/Special Operations or Detention/Training/Administration operations.

Position Description
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Directs assigned division functions and personnel; plans daily workflow to ensure proper personnel assignments; implements policies and procedures; reviews the work of, counsels, evaluates and disciplines personnel.
  • Assists the Major in developing division goals, policies, and procedures.
  • Participates in hiring, promotion, and discipline functions; reviews personnel-related issues, including leave requests, secondary employment requests, work-related injuries, Use of Force reports, etc.
  • Prepares administrative reports and forms, forwards to proper agency or authority.
  • Reviews and approve reports written by subordinate officers; prepares administrative reports of division activities.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of vehicles, weapons, facilities, and/or other property.
  • Attends community-related events and meetings; attends meetings with other law enforcement agency representatives.

    Uniform Patrol/CID/Special Operations

     
  • Directs uniform patrol and criminal investigations functions as assigned.
  • Conducts shift briefings and assigns geographical areas of responsibility to personnel; responds to calls for service and assumes command.

    Detention/Training

     
  • Coordinates the development of the annual department budget, monitors and controls expenditures.
  • Oversees the procurement of goods and services.
  • Manages and oversees contracts for goods and services.
  • Directs department training, professional standards, records, and information technology operations.
  • Overtly displays a positive attitude that sincerely supports and encourages the betterment of the City of Acworth, the citizenry, city officials, supervision, counterparts, and subordinates.
  • Maintains a command decorum that supports and emulates the vision of the Chief of Police regarding mentorship of future leaders, work ethic, community engagement, and public safety.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of law enforcement management principles, including organizational structure, chain of command, and administrative procedures.
  • Knowledge of personnel management principles.
  • Knowledge of budget management principles.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement principles and practices, including traffic control, crime prevention, criminal investigation, jail administration, and criminal process and arrest procedures, methods, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of search and seizure and evidence preservation and presentation principles.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws, ordinances, court procedures, legal precedents, and government regulations.
  • Knowledge of program assessment principles.
  • Knowledge of management and supervisory principles and practices.
  • Skill in the preparation of clear and precise administrative reports.
  • Skill in the interpretation and application of federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Skill in planning, organizing, analyzing, decision making, and problem solving.
  • Skill in the use and care of firearms and other standard and specialized equipment.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment, including a computer and calculator.
  • Skill in public relations.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Police Major assigns work in terms of division goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of division activities.

GUIDELINES
Guidelines include department policies and procedures, federal and state laws, case law, accreditation standards, and city policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
  • The work consists of varied administrative, managerial, supervisory, and law enforcement duties. Potentially dangerous and life-threatening situations contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to supervise assigned department operations. Successful performance helps ensure the safety of life and property and results in the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws.
CONTACTS
  • Contacts are typically with department personnel, other city employees, business owners, citizens, suspects, victims, witnesses, inmates, court personnel, and representatives of other law enforcement agencies.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, motivate, and direct employees, and settle matters.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of specialized law enforcement equipment.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over assigned personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge commonly associated with the completion of a master’s degree in a course of study related to the occupational field or an experience level that sufficiently demonstrates competency as determined by the Chief of Police.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department, usually interpreted to require three to five years of related experience.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia.
