JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for the supervision and assignment of daily work to sanitation and brush collection crews.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Monitors and inspects route crews to ensure work is completed on time and in accordance with the established work and safety standards.
- Receives route assignments from Sanitation Operations Manager and coordinates crew assignments, and equipment to effectively accomplish daily work assignments.
- Responds to complaints of missed refuse and trash and picks up as needed.
- Trains new employees and implements new policies and procedures.
- Leads safety talks and other training as requested.
- Maintains and updates time and production records.
- Fills in for drivers during team member absences or staffing shortages.
- Assists Manager with performance evaluations and makes recommendations; explains city and department policies and procedures to team members. Resolves performance problems with employees and documents violations. Reports unresolved personnel matters to the Supervisor for further action.
- Helps wash and maintain trucks and equipment.
- Performs pre and post trip inspections and ensures drivers conduct inspections daily.
- May be required to perform duties in other divisions within the department in certain circumstances, including, but not limited to periods of heavy workload, natural disasters, and city events.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of city streets and geography.
- Knowledge of equipment, materials, safety practices and proper work procedures currently used in waste disposal.
- Skill in the operation of solid waste collection vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in providing customer services.
- Skills in oral and written communication.
- Skill in directing the work of personnel.
- Skill in planning, organization, and decision making.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
- The Sanitation Operations Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
- Guidelines include traffic laws and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related equipment operation duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to manage sanitation routes and a group of route crews. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of solid waste collection services.

- Contacts are typically with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while intermittently standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must distinguish between shades of color.
- Work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggle, or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has functional supervision over Sanitation Crew Leader-Drivers and Crew Members as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge and level of competency are commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with or having assisted in performing the duties and training for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid commercial driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
